Piazza delle Erbe

Piazza delle Erbe is located in the historic centre of Bolzano. From here you can go towards the arcades or towards Via Museo.

Obstmarkt - fruit market - is the German name given to the square and the neighbouring alleys in the historic centre of Bolzano, where stalls on both sides offer bread, spices, flowers, fruit and vegetables. In Italian, however, the market is known as Piazza delle Erbe, and is open all year round except on Sundays: in spring you can find colourful flowers, in summer crisp salads and fresh fruit, in autumn delicious chestnuts are roasted, and in winter it is the ideal place to stop and enjoy a good mulled wine. Piazza delle Erbe has a long history: Goethe, on his trip to Italy in 1786, mentioned this food market.

Mentioned for the first time in the 14th century as 'Oberer Platz' (superior platea), in 1487 it was referred to as 'Obzplatz': thus the evolution of a name not directly derived from fresh fruit. A city law of 1437 allowed the trade of poultry, fruit and eggs in the city only at the Herbstplatz. In addition to the stalls, other sights worth seeing include the Neptune Fountain, a classicist bronze statue by Joachim Reiss dating from 1749, the historic Torch House, and the two stumbling stones in the upper section which, since 2015, commemorate the two Holocaust victims Auguste Freund and Wilhelm Alexander Loew-Cadonna.
