Arcades

Via dei Portici is the original core of the city of Bolzano, which was built on the initiative of the Prince-Bishop of Trento in the last decades of the 12th century.

Via dei Portici (Laubengasse) was built as early as the 12th century by the Bishops of Trento as the original core and trading district of the medieval city, founded around 1180. Via dei Portici consists of covered arcades with round arches, vaults for storing goods, and the flats above with a bright inner courtyard.

Today we can find here the special South Tyrolean atmosphere, a little Mediterranean, a little Alpine. At the beginning of the arcades and the pedestrian zone is Via Museo with the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. The romantic alleys in the surrounding area, such as Via Argentieri behind Piazza Walther, Via della Mostra, Via Bottai with the Museum of Natural Sciences and Via Dr. Streiter with the Capitol cinema, give visitors a unique feeling and invite them to linger for a while in front of the old buildings. By the way: Bolzano's arcades are 300 metres shorter than Merano's, which at 400 metres is the longest arcade street in the Tyrol!
